In this article, we'll introduce you to our Software developers: Ana, Kria, Kristína, our Automation tester specialist Timea and Application maintenance specialist Danka. Read on, and hear their thoughts on their careers, goals, and the importance of women's voices in tech.
1. Why did you choose an IT career?
Ana: From a young age, I was good at maths and science studies and I was leaning towards STEM industries. Learning programming interested me and pushed me in that direction, so I chose Computer science engineering.
Kria: Because I have always enjoyed solving logical problems and prefer to work in a peaceful environment, either in silence or with music on my laptop. I wouldn't choose anything else for now; an IT career is my dream job.
Timea: It was just a coincidence. I was looking for a job, I got invited to an interview and they let me test the application there. I really liked it.
Danka: Ever since my school days, I have been very interested in the subject of Informatics. And I certainly do not regret my decision, I am satisfied with my career in IT.
Kristína: I wanted to learn new things, and fortunately, I had a loved one (my now husband) who could guide me professionally. So, I began programming. I certainly wouldn't change anything and I'm glad for this decision.
2. What are some of the key lessons you have learned throughout your career in IT, and how have these lessons helped you to grow and develop as a professional?
Kristína: The key is to remain calm and work with a clear head without stress. Do not rush, because the more you rush, the more mistakes you make.
Timea: The most important lesson I've learnt is to never rest on your laurels. We must continue to grow, otherwise we risk being left behind.
Kria: Don't be afraid to ask for help when you get stuck. You can spend days trying to solve a problem on your own, while someone else could give you a hint in a matter of seconds. Also, don't be quiet if something about the project bothers you or you want to improve something.
3. What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your job at Unique People, and what keeps you motivated to continue working in IT?
Ana: IT world is constantly changing and evolving so there is a lot of opportunities to learn new skills. Unique People actively helps by providing trainings necessary for my development as a software engineer.
Kristína: In my opinion, it's a team, and by that, I mean colleagues across all departments who are always willing to help and give their time. And of course, morning coffee. :D
Danka: Collective. It is much easier when people progress together. With technology changing rapidly, it's easy to feel lost sometimes, but a good colleague will always help.
4. What is the best thing about being an IT woman at Unique People?
Kria: There are no differences between men and women at Unique People. They respect us equally and the only thing that matters is how you get along in the team and how hard-working you are.
Timea: That I can be myself in a very pleasant group of IT women and of course IT men also.
Ana: Working with wonderful colleagues in a friendly and productive environment.
5. What advice would you give to young men and women who are interested in pursuing a career in IT?
Ana: IT industry is vast and offers a lot, and anyone with interest in IT can find something they are good at and it really interests them. So, don’t be afraid to explore different fields and technologies until you find something that suits you.
Kristína: Don´t be afraid. There are a lot of successful IT specialists that started their career in a different field, or they studied something else. It's still a good time to start, there are plenty of options.
Timea: If you enjoy IT, go for it.
Danka: Try it out. It is an interesting job. There is always something new to discover.
Kria: The best advice is the advice they must have heard a million times, but it's really the best advice, especially in IT career: never give up!
To all the women working in IT, we see you and we appreciate your contributions. We hope that you will continue to inspire future generations of IT professionals. May your stories and insights encourage more girls to pursue IT careers. The industry is male dominated now but remember the first programmer and don´t let anyone stop you from achieving your goals.
